Deployed personnel granted tax extension

ADF personnel unable to lodge tax returns because of operational deployments have been granted an extension.

The Defence Tax Management Office (DTMO) has negotiated with the ATO an extension until March 31, 2003.

Operational deployments include peacekeeping, warlike and non-warlike duties in areas specified in PACMAN chapter 6, annex H (including Op Slipper).

Personnel eligible for an extension should contact or authorise someone, such as a spouse, to contact the DTMO by October 25.

The DTMO will need a tax file number so the extension can be noted in its records.

Taxpayers are required to lodge a tax return by October 31, although this deadline is extended if a tax agent is used.

Penalties for not lodging a tax return range from $110 to $550, depending on the number of days the return is overdue.

The PACMAN can be found at defweb.cbr.defence.gov.au/dpedet or www.defence.gov.au/dpe/dpedet.

If ADF personnel are unsure of their operational deployment status, they should contact their relevant administration area for assistance.

E-mail inquiries can be forwarded to taxation.management@defence.gov.au
