Cadets outpaddle the competition

By Andrew Stackpool

AIR Force cadets paddled strongly against other ADF competitors to take four firsts and a fourth during the recent interservice canoeing championships held in conjunction with the Murray River marathon.

AAFC No. 412 Squadron won first place in the junior mixed school’s touring kayak two-man (TK2) relay in 38:07:45.

Flight Lieutenant (AAFC) Danny Salmon and Ben Pardew took first place in the double touring kayak for the 200km half marathon in 16 hours.

Cadet Under Officer (AAFC) Rob Schneider took first in the same event in the men’s open single kayak with a time of 17:12:13.

Stewart Nichol and Marie Taylor, competing for Air Force, stormed to first place in the mixed veterans’ 40 TK2 in 34:17:21.

Leading Aircraftman (AAFC) John Schneider took fourth in the men’s veteran 50 single touring kayak class in 37:46:21 seconds.

The ADF kayaking team had 19 members competing in eight events at the marathon and raised $4800 for the Red Cross.
