SERGEANT Wendy Jones was a 40-yearold medical assistant from RAAF Base Amberley.

She enlisted in 1990, entering into the medical assistant mustering. Following initial training at No. 1 Recruit Training Unit at RAAF Base Edinburgh and the Training Flight 6 Hospital at RAAF Base Williams, she was posted to No. 6 RAAF Base Hospital at the Victorian base.

SGT Jones had qualifications and skills in operational health support, life support skills and critical incident stress management - peer support. In 1993 she posted to Base Squadron Pearce in WA and then to No. 306 Health Services Flight at RAAF Base Pearce.

In 1999, SGT Jones was posted to Defence Corporate Support Office at RAAF Base Darwin for nursing duties at Area Health Service – NT. She deployed to East Timor for Operation Warden and received the Australian Active Service Medal – East Timor Clasp and International Force East Timor Medal.

While on deployment, SGT Jones was posted to No. 321 Combat Support Squadron at RAAF Base Darwin. Last year she was promoted to the rank of sergeant and posted to No. 1 Air Transportable Health Services at RAAF Base Amberley. SGT Jones deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and was awarded the Australian Active Service Medal with clasps Iraq 2003 and International Coalition Against Terrorism.

SGT Jones has a defacto spouse, Sergeant Jason Hastie. FLIGHT Lieutenant Lynne Rowbottom joined the Air Force as a nursing officer in 1996 at the age of 34, with many years of nursing experience.

She began her career at the rank of flying officer and was posted to many bases. Following initial training at the RAAF College and Training Flight 6 Hospital in Victoria, FLTLT Rowbottom was posted in 1997 to RAAF Hospital at RAAF Williams, Laverton.

Two years later she was promoted to flight lieutenant. She gained many considerable skills and qualifications in the Air Force.

These skills and qualifications included rotary-wing aeromedical evacuation, suicide first aid, helicopter underwater escape, nursing officer trauma training, operational health support and field nursing courses.

In 2001 FLTLT Rowbottom was posted to No. 323 Combat Support Squadron at RAAF Base Townsville. During this time she participated in Operation Citadel in East Timor.

For her service she was awarded the Australian Active Service Medal – East Timor Clasp. FLTLT Rowbottom deployed to Indonesia for Operation Sumatra Assist II on March 31. She was married to Terry and has a son, Rhys.

SQUADRON Leader Paul McCarthy, a 30-year-old medical officer, joined the Air Force in 1995 as an officer cadet medical undergraduate.

The University of Queensland awarded him a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in late 1997. He was promoted to the rank of flight lieutenant in 1998 and started a RAAF undergraduate residency training at Nambour General Hospital in Queensland.

From January to June 2000 he took leave to train and participate in the Australian championships for surf boat rowing, resulting in an A-grade surf boat title. On his return he was posted to No. 3 RAAF Hospital at RAAF Base Richmond.

He spent most of his service at RAAF Base Williamtown at Health Services Flight/No. 2 Air Transportable Health Services. During this time he participated in exercises Kakadu and Arnhem Thunder and deployed to Operations Slipper, Citadel and Falconer.

He was awarded the Australian Active Service Medal with clasps International Coalition Against Terrorism, East Timor and Iraq 2003. In late 2003 he was promoted to squadron leader and posted to Health Services Flight at RAAF Base Pearce.

SQNLDR McCarthy’s experience with the Air Force gave him skills in aeromedical evacuation, rotary-wing aeromedical evacuation and he held an early management of severe trauma license.

SQNLDR McCarthy was single.
