Indonesia gives medal to thank helo crew

The Indonesian Humanitarian Service Medal, Satyalancara Kebaktian Sosial.

THE Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has awarded the Indonesian Humanitarian Service Medal to each of the nine deceased ADF members.

The Indonesian medal was pinned to a green and gold ribbon and laid on a red velvet cushion on top of each of the nine coffins at a ceremony at Sydney International Airport.

Leading Aircraftman Scott Nichols and Leading Seaman Shane Warburton will be presented their medals at a later date.

The 11 ADF members involved in the Sea King accident may also be eligible to receive Australia’s Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal.

The Australian medal has been approved to recognise eligible Australians’ service to the tsunami and earthquake-ravaged people of Sumatra as well as other areas where humanitarian effort has been required.
