18 March 2014

Today I will travel to Jakarta, Indonesia, to attend the fourth Jakarta International Defence Dialogue at the invitation of Indonesian Minister for Defence, Dr Purnomo Yusgiantoro.

I will be accompanied by Chief of Defence Force, General David Hurley AC, DSC; Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs AO, CSC, RAN; and Air Commander Australia, Air Vice Marshal Mel Hupfeld DSC.

The Jakarta International Defence Dialogue (JIDD) is an important regional security dialogue which this year has the central theme of maritime security in the region. I will join panelists from India, Japan, Indonesia, Republic of Korea and Australia to speak on the emergence of the Indo-Pacific.

This is the first time an Australian Defence Minister has participated in the JIDD.

I will also meet with the Indonesian Minister for Defence, Dr Purnomo Yusgiantoro, to listen to my Indonesian and other regional colleague’s views on regional security and help promote opportunities for Australia’s defence industry.

In conjunction with the Jakarta International Defence Dialogue, Indonesia will hold the Asia Pacific Security and Defence Exposition (APSDEX). A small Australian defence Industry delegation will attend APSDEX.

Indonesia is an important strategic partner for Australia and we remain committed to our bilateral defence relationship.

We welcome continued open communication between Australian and Indonesian Defence officials and a return to our broad program of defence engagement activities.
