Two Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) planes have been providing wide area surveillance and imagery collection of areas impacted by Cyclone Marcia across central Queensland.
I am advised by Defence that with improved weather conditions, a KA350 King Air and AP-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft have been able to collect high resolution imagery of the disaster area for detailed analysis.
Additionally, Australian Army Reserve soldiers from the 11th Brigade have assisted local council personnel in the Rockhampton area to clear roads of debris to allow emergency management officials and utility companies to begin restoring essential services.
Defence is liaising with Queensland emergency management officials at the local and State level and has provided advice on its ability to respond to a range of contingencies.
Defence personnel are also liaising with Northern Territory emergency officials who are coordinating responses to Cyclone Lam which passed over the north-east Northern Territory coastline yesterday morning. No requests for Defence support have been received following Cyclone Lam.
Defence stands ready to support Queensland and our thoughts are with those who have been affected by the cyclones and the resulting damage.
