Today I visited Australian Defence Apparel (ADA) in Bendigo. ADA is an example of Australian Industry partnering with Defence to provide the best equipment for the Australian Defence Force (ADF) at the best price for the taxpayer.
ADA is a clothing manufacturer with over 100 years experience in providing garments for a variety of clients and situations including frontline combat, hard and soft armour, ceremonial dress, industrial workwear and corporate suiting.
ADA employs around 70 people full time to produce the Standard Combat Uniforms (SCU) for the ADF. They are one of two contracted suppliers to undertake this work and can expand their manufacturing capacity when required.
The Abbott Government recognises the significant value to our nation of having a workforce that supports the ADF. We are committed to working closely with Australian industry to bring about a safer and more secure Australia.
Since being appointed Defence Minister in December last year, I have made a deliberate effort to visit defence industry around the country.
It is clear to me that there is much to celebrate about the contribution the defence industry in Australia is making at home and abroad.
To sustain this industry, strong and visionary leadership is required that will lead to a defence industry that is structured to operate effectively and drive efficiencies, and a commitment to a productivity-based culture.
The Abbott Government is prepared to invest in the skills and knowledge base of the defence industry. We are prepared to commit to long-term investment to make sure this important industry enjoys a future in Australia and these critical skills are maintained.
ADA is a fine example of Defence and industry working together for the betterment of the ADF.
