Following three years of military and academic studies, 224 officer cadets and midshipmen graduated today from the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA).
The celebrations also coincided with ADFA’s 30th anniversary and recognised the contribution over 6200 ADFA graduates have made to the Defence Force. The anniversary was honoured with the inaugural Minister for Defence’s Military Citizenship Award.
Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne said the award was presented to the Midshipman or Officer Cadet who through initiative and personal responsibility demonstrated conspicuous citizenship towards Academy peers and the Australian public.
The inaugural award was presented to Australian Army Officer Cadet Michael Snart by the Minister for Defence Personnel, the Hon Dan Tehan MP, on behalf of Minister Payne, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to ADFA and the Australian community.
“Throughout his time at ADFA, Officer Cadet Snart participated in numerous community service activities, consistently supported his peers and subordinates and epitomised the ADFA values of courage, respect, integrity, service and professionalism,” Minister Payne said.
“He is a young leader of great character who understands that military officers are citizens of our nation.
“Officer Cadet Snart is a role model for his peers and well deserving of this inaugural award.”
In acknowledgment of the power of the written word as a weapon to draw upon in the face of future challenges, the winner was presented with a high quality pen to carry with him throughout his career.
“I hope that his example and this award will inspire the Academy’s officer cadets and midshipmen in the future,” she said.
Officer Cadet Snart, who also graduated with a Bachelor of Business degree, will commence the next phase of his training at the Royal Military College-Duntroon in 2017 and operational duties thereafter.
