Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, will visit Singapore on 1 and 2 June to attend the Shangri-La Dialogue alongside key counterparts and defence officials from over 40 nations.
“The Shangri-La Dialogue is the largest and most important annual gathering of defence ministers, defence force chiefs and senior security officials from across the Indo-Pacific region,” Minister Payne said.
“It is a key opportunity to work with my counterparts to further regional cooperation and to discuss key challenges to security in the Indo-Pacific, including the ongoing threat of terrorism.”
“It is important that Australia continues to work closely with our partners to ensure that the Indo-Pacific continues to evolve peacefully, avoiding erosion of fundamental principles that underpin the rules-based order.”
Minister Payne will participate in the inaugural Female Leaders Panel on ‘The strategic implications of new technologies on defence policy’, and deliver remarks at the Third Plenary Session on ‘Shaping Asia’s evolving security order’.
While in Singapore the Minister will meet with Japanese Minister of Defence Itsunori Onodera and United States Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis for the annual Australia-Japan-United States Trilateral Defence Ministers’ Meeting.
Minister Payne will also hold a number of bilateral meetings with her counterparts.
Also attending the 2018 Dialogue with the Minister for Defence are the the Chief of the Defence Force Designate, Lieutenant General Angus Campbell, the Secretary of Defence, Mr Greg Moriarty. The Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ms Frances Adamson is also attending.
