296 midshipmen and officer cadets have graduated as junior officers in the Australian Defence Force today, taking part in an historic Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) Graduation Parade.

It was the first time that six squadrons had participated in a graduation parade, making it one of the biggest in the history of ADFA.

Trainee officers at ADFA combine military leadership and training with study for a world class university degree delivered by the University of New South Wales, Canberra.

The graduation parade marks the end of both their university studies and their initial officer training.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, the Hon Matt Keogh MP, said it was the first time since 2019 that ADFA had been able to field the entire academy in a graduation parade after two years of smaller COVID-19 impacted events.

“The class of 2022 have proven their resilience, adaptability and flexibility, having had their first two years of study impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Minister Keogh said.

”I want to congratulate our future leaders for their work and wish them well in long and fulfilling careers.

“The leadership qualities and friendships forged during this challenging time will no doubt continue to serve them and the nation well as they take the next steps in their careers as junior officers in the Australian Defence Force.”

“Their three years at ADFA have instilled in them the character, leadership and professionalism required to excel not only in the ADF but in their lifelong careers,” Minister Keogh said.

“For high school leavers receiving their results, I would say have a good look at the world class university education provided at ADFA, which includes being paid a salary to study, being HELP debt-free, and having a guaranteed job.”

“With about 300 different types of roles available within Defence, there’s a job for everyone.”

As junior officers in the ADF, graduates will now be posted to Defence establishments around Australia to either continue their training or commence operational duties.
