Team Australia celebrated their Invictus Games success at a spectacular Closing Ceremony in Dusseldorf, Germany last night.
One of the standout performances at the Games came from Erin Brigden, who spent nearly a decade in the Australian Army before medically transitioning to civilian life 18-months ago.
Since her transition, Erin has been dedicated to her training for the Games, her hard work paying off, with the achievement of personal bests in every event she competed in.
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, Matt Keogh, said the Invictus Games was an opportunity for millions of people around the world to pay tribute to those who serve and acknowledge their sacrifices.
“Our competitors pushed themselves to new limits and celebrated personal bests, while others relished the opportunity to participate for the first time.” Minister Keogh said.
“Every one of our competitors has done Australia proud. We have watched their unwavering dedication and commitment and we celebrate everyone who has played a part in their incredible journeys.
“It was fantastic to see the endless support of the family and friends who proved to be Team Australia’s biggest fans.”
Team Australia was made up of 31 serving and former Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel who have been wounded, injured or become ill during their military service.
From 9 to 16 September, Australia’s competitors participated in athletics, indoor rowing, powerlifting, road cycling, sitting volleyball, table tennis, swimming, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby.
Sights now turn to the Invictus Games in 2025, which will be a Winter Hybrid Games hosted by Canada in Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia, the first event of its kind.
