The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, the Hon Richard Marles MP, will visit Jakarta, Indonesia, this weekend to represent Australia at the inauguration of incoming Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

Indonesia is one of Australia’s closest partners and this year marks 75 years of bilateral diplomatic relations. Australia looks forward to working with the incoming President and his Cabinet to further deepen cooperation between our countries.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles were pleased to host incoming President Prabowo on his official visit as President-elect in August 2024, underscoring the importance of the relationship between Indonesia and Australia

The Australian Government thanks outgoing President Joko Widodo and his administration for our strengthened bilateral ties. Key milestones include elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018, entry into force of the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in 2020 and signing of the Defence Cooperation Agreement in August 2024.

Quotes attributable to Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Richard Marles MP:

“There is no relationship more important to Australia than our relationship with Indonesia. Our two countries are working closely together in shaping a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region that is respectful of sovereignty.”

“The Australian Government looks forward to working closely with President Prabowo and his new administration on shared economic, security and human development priorities.”
