Defence is delivering a Critical Infrastructure Recovery Program in two stages to address significant condition, capacity and compliance issues with its existing wharves and engineering services.
Today Assistant Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon David Fawcett, announced critical infrastructure works at Garden Island, Sydney NSW, which will be delivered under Stage Two of the Critical Infrastructure Recovery Program, valued at $286 million.
The works represent the Government’s significant investment in Garden Island as the primary home port for Navy ships on the east coast. This investment follows previous funding of $213 million for Stage 1 in 2017, with wharf infrastructure works already underway to ensure Navy can continue to secure our region and conduct disaster relief”. Minister Fawcett said.
Defence has engaged Lendlease Building Pty Ltd to deliver the works, with construction scheduled to commence in May 2019 for completion in late 2023.
“Lendlease has developed a Local Industry Capability Plan, which will maximise opportunities for local and Indigenous business to be involved, with approximately 2,500 personnel being directly and indirectly employed over the construction period,” Minister Fawcett said.
