Assistant Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon David Fawcett, and Federal Member for Grey, Mr Rowan Ramsey MP have announced that the Department of Defence and the District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula have agreed to the contract terms for the off-market sale of the Coomunga Rifle Range.
“This is a great outcome for Port Lincoln, the local community and Defence,” Assistant Minister Fawcett said.
“The 160-hectare site provides community rifle clubs a space for competitions and activities which has been a long-standing practice in the region.
“The sale of Coomunga Rifle Range demonstrates the Australian Government’s commitment to unlocking surplus Commonwealth properties for uses that support the Australian community.”
Federal Member for Grey, Mr Rowan Ramsey MP, said he was very pleased with the announcement of the sale.
“A sale to the Council represents a great opportunity for the community to continue a well-established activity in the region”, Mr Ramsey said.
“I have had ongoing communication with the Port Lincoln Rifle Club regarding the rifle range and I know the club will be very pleased with this result.”
District Council Mayor Jo-Anne Quigley said the Council has been working with the Port Lincoln Rifle Club and Department of Defence since 2015 to ensure that the local community could retain this facility.
“This is a great result for both the Club and the Council. This facility adds to the diverse range of recreational opportunities available to our Council district,” Mayor Quigley said.
Defence and the Council have agreed the contract terms for the sale of the site, subject to the Council completing its final due diligence.
It is anticipated the sale will be completed in the second half of 2019.
