The Department has not, and is not intending, to issue a directive on the use of gender-neutral language.
Defence policies are developed in accordance with Australian law, including the Sex Discrimination Act. The Sex Discrimination Act prohibits discrimination "on the ground of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex status, marital or relationship status, actual or potential pregnancy…”
Defence members are not required, nor they will they be required, to use gender-neutral language.
